01 — The problem

Order of treatment decides what survives.

Sequencing errors are irreversible

A technique applied out of order can consume, contaminate or obscure the material a later discipline needs. The loss is rarely visible at the bench and cannot be undone once the exhibit has been treated.

The reference is scattered

Guidance sits across manuals, review literature, source books and local protocols. Reconciling fingermark development with DNA, trace, documents and digital recovery is left to individual judgement under time pressure.

Cross-discipline experience is uneven

Few practitioners can hold the full multidisciplinary picture for every substrate and case type. Unusual exhibits are exactly where a considered second opinion is hardest to obtain quickly.

02 — What it does

Describe the exhibit. Read the sequence — and the warnings.

Substrate, condition, contaminants, what is being sought, what the case requires. The response places fingermark development correctly within the wider recovery order and cites the literature behind each step.

The negative guidance is the part practitioners ask for first: what not to do on this exhibit, and what it would cost downstream.

What not to do — and why
Do not powder before DNA sampling. Brush contact redistributes and dilutes contact traces on the handles, and the sampling record can no longer be tied cleanly to untouched areas.
Do not apply solvent-based chemistry ahead of fuming. On this substrate it risks removing the very residue the primary development route depends on.
Do not recover interior residue first. Handling for residue collection introduces fresh deposits and mechanical damage across the surfaces still to be searched for marks.

Substrate and condition, how it was recovered, what is being sought, and any constraints the case imposes. Plain language, as you would brief a colleague.

Receive a cited sequence

An ordered cross-discipline treatment plan with fingermark development placed correctly, each step referenced to the corpus, plus the contra-indications for that exhibit.

Apply under your own SOP

You remain the decision-maker. The output is a second opinion to weigh against your laboratory's validated procedures, accreditation scope and available capability.

04 — Trust & validation

The corpus is the product. The app is a thin wrapper.

Nothing is generated from open web material. The knowledge base is assembled from accredited forensic literature and ratified by named specialists, and every step returned carries its citation so it can be checked at the bench.

Interpol Review of Fingermarks and Other Body Fluids (Bécue, Champod and colleagues), used as the anchoring review of the field's evidence base.

Cross-validation

Checked against the Fingerprint Source Book v3.0 to reconcile terminology, technique coverage and substrate guidance.

Ratification

Reviewed with specialists from the European Division of the IAI and university forensic departments. Ratification is ongoing; the product remains in validation and is not offered for casework use.
